Try this to energize your morning!

energize your morning

I didn’t start drinking coffee until my very last semester of college. I’m not sure if I really needed the caffeine to get me through those final days of teaching middle school band, or if drinking coffee made me feel like an actual adult, but that’s where my love of drinking coffee each morning began.

Almost twenty years later, I still enjoy a good cup of coffee every morning. If I’m honest, sometimes the thought of drinking my Breakfast Blend with a splash of coconut milk and a couple of drops of English Toffee stevia motivates me to roll out of bed. I especially love sipping a warm mug as I spend time with Jesus.

I love coffee, and I believe drinking it in moderation isn’t a bad thing. But, I know coffee is not the best fuel for me first thing in the morning.

So every morning I start out with a large glass of lemon water. Lemon has a TON of health benefits to your body — it aids digestion, boosts your immune system, promotes healthy weight, and leads to clear skin, just to name a few. If you want to find out more, here’s a good article about the benefits of lemon water.

For a while, I kept fresh lemons in the fridge and added about half of one to my water every morning. And while chopping, squeezing, and adding that lemon to my water every single morning wasn’t a ton of work, I realized that at 6am when I could barely keep my eyes open, I was likely to skip out on those extra tasks.

I’m all for convenience and saving time, so a couple of years ago I started making lemon ice cubes. This super simple trick has helped me be consistent with adding lemon and all of the health benefits to my water first thing in the morning. And it’s super simple!

Now instead of spending a few of the precious minutes I have to myself in the morning chopping, squeezing, and cleaning up the mess that I made, I just plop these ready-made lemon ice cubes into my glass of water.

Here’s what I do to make lemon ice cubes:

1. Buy a bag of fresh lemons — I use plain old lemons I find in our not-so-fancy chain grocery store here in the Midwest

2. Cut the lemons in half, and squeeze out the juice. You can do this by hand, which will be an awesome workout for your forearms and biceps. Or I recommend buying a little hand-held juicer like this one.

If you really want to step up your game and make sure you’re getting every single last drop of juice out of that lemon, try an electric citrus juicer. Mine was a hand-me-down from my mom! Score!

3. Pour the fresh lemon juice into ice cube trays and freeze for a couple of hours.

4. Once frozen, put the lemon ice cubes into a container and store them in the freezer. I use a ziplock bag.

5. Grab 1-2 of the lemon ice cubes from the freezer, and add them to your water!

Pro tip: Use a mason jar if you want to feel fancy.

Bonus pro tip from my son:

Add lemon ice cubes and a drop or two of liquid stevia to a Lemon La Croix for an extra-delightful citrusy, summery drink.

This super simple habit has helped me start my day in a way that helps me feel better so that I can love others better.

But I think the coffee might help with that just a little bit too 😉
