RevTip: How to memorize Scripture

*Blog post updated January 2024

memorize scripture

Do you have a hard time memorizing Scripture?

Do you try and try and yet nothing seems to stick?

If your answer is YES to either of those questions, I understand you, and I get your frustration.

You might be surprised that I have also struggled in this area. I confess I found myself envious of others who said they prayed for God to help them remember and then POOF, suddenly they had photographic memories.

Man, what a gift!

“I would like that kind of gift”, I thought to myself, and have asked the Lord for that gift time and time again over the years.

Guess what? It never came.

But I never gave up. I did move the desire for memorizing scripture on the backburner of my mind. For years I focused more on studying the Bible and spending time with God in His word. I continued to grow.

God is faithful to draw near to us when we draw near to Him. Perhaps God wanted me to grow first by drawing near to Him in study. That is definitely time best spent. Just as Mary chose what’s best by choosing to spend time at Jesus’ feet, I think that’s what God was doing in me.

“but few things are needed–or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:42

Thinking about thinking, Learning about learning

Then I did the Revelation Wellness 21-day Sugar Fast.

During the Fast, a desire was unlocked inside of me that opened my heart and mind to crave more and more of Him. It felt good to have so much space in my mind and stomach (aka…the second brain) for Him.

The fast did exactly what it was supposed to do, it opened my eyes, ears, and mind to the power of His words.

I began to crave Scripture, and I wanted it tattooed all over my heart. I wanted to open my mouth and for God’s Word to flow out of me like a river overflowing its banks.

I asked God to, “Write it in me so that I may become it, Lord.”

I got hungry and wanted to know how God designed our memories to work. So, I studied to learn about how we learn and gleaned knowledge from some of the best memory coaches.

It’s been so fun!

Now, I am excited to share this knowledge with anyone who wants more of God’s word sealed up inside of them.  But not just because they are people looking for a weapon to use (yes…the word of God has been used for that) but because they are looking for a way to become the Word.

The big takeaway from what I learned about how our memory works: WE THINK AND LEARN BEST IN PICTURES.

We think and learn best in pictures.

Memorizing with Pictures

In the past six weeks, I have challenged my brain to memorize information by translating words into pictures in my mind.

This strategy has helped me retain more information (names, bible verses, my talking points for teaching on stage…etc) than ever before.

It’s so FREEING!

(PS. It’s no mistake that I have a Bachelor’s degree in Art Education. I think and learn in pictures! God knew)

Our brains LOVE pictures.

At the heart of us, we are all storytellers, and turning words into pictures is a powerful way to learn and retain.
